    2. For the distribution Class: 0–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15–20, 20–25 Frequency: 10, 15, 12, 20, 9 the sum of the lower limits of the median class and the modal class is: (a) 15 (b) 25 (c) 30 (d) 35

    (b) 25 N = 66, N/2 = 33; cumulative frequencies 10, 25, 37, … so the median class is 10–15. The modal class is 15–20. 10 + 15 = 25.

  3. Very Important · 5 marks

    3. The median of the following data is 525 and the total frequency is 100. Find x and y. Class: 0–100, 100–200, 200–300, 300–400, 400–500, 500–600, 600–700, 700–800, 800–900, 900–1000 Frequency: 2, 5, x, 12, 17, 20, y, 9, 7, 4

    76 + x + y = 100, so x + y = 24. The median 525 lies in 500–600: l = 500, f = 20, cf = 36 + x, h = 100. 525 = 500 + [(50 − 36 − x)/20] × 100, so 14 − x = 5 and x = 9; y = 15.

  4. Practice · 1 marks

    4. The upper limit of the modal class of this distribution is: Height (cm): below 140, below 145, below 150, below 155, below 160, below 165 Number of girls: 4, 11, 29, 40, 46, 51 (a) 165 (b) 160 (c) 155 (d) 150

    (d) 150 Class frequencies: 4, 7, 18, 11, 6, 5. The highest is 18, for 145–150.

  5. Important · 3 marks

    5. The lengths of 40 leaves of a plant, measured to the nearest millimetre: Length (mm): 118–126, 127–135, 136–144, 145–153, 154–162, 163–171, 172–180 Number of leaves: 3, 5, 9, 12, 5, 4, 2 Find the mean length of the leaves.

    Class marks: 122, 131, 140, 149, 158, 167, 176. Take a = 149, d = x − 149. Σfd = −81 − 90 − 81 + 0 + 45 + 72 + 54 = −81, Σf = 40. Mean = 149 − 81/40 = 149 − 2.025 = 146.975 mm.

  6. Very Important · 5 marks

    6. The median of this data is 50 and the total frequency is 90. Find p and q, and the mode. Marks: 20–30, 30–40, 40–50, 50–60, 60–70, 70–80, 80–90 Students: p, 15, 25, 20, q, 8, 10

    p + q + 78 = 90, so p + q = 12. Median 50 lies at the start of the class 50–60: 50 = 50 + [(45 − (p + 40))/20] × 10, so p = 5 and q = 7. Modal class 40–50 (f₁ = 25, f₀ = 15, f₂ = 20): Mode = 40 + [10/(50 − 35)] × 10 = 46.67.

  7. Practice · 1 marks

    9. Find the mean and median of the data: Class: 85–90, 90–95, 95–100, 100–105, 105–110, 110–115 Frequency: 15, 22, 20, 18, 20, 25

    Take a = 102.5, h = 5, u = (x − 102.5)/5. Σf = 120, Σfu = −45 − 44 − 20 + 0 + 20 + 50 = −39. Mean = 102.5 + 5 × (−39/120) = 100.875. Cumulative frequencies: 15, 37, 57, 75, 95, 120. N/2 = 60, so the median class is 100–105 (l = 100, cf = 57, f = 18). Median = 100 + [(60 − 57)/18] × 5 ≈ 100.83.

  10. Very Important · 5 marks

    10. The monthly expenditure on milk in 200 families is: Expenditure (₹): 1000–1500, 1500–2000, 2000–2500, 2500–3000, 3000–3500, 3500–4000, 4000–4500, 4500–5000 Families: 24, 40, 33, x, 30, 22, 16, 7 Find x and the mean expenditure.

    172 + x = 200, so x = 28. Class marks 1250, 1750, …, 4750; Σfx = 30000 + 70000 + 74250 + 77000 + 97500 + 82500 + 68000 + 33250 = 5,32,500. Mean = 532500/200 = ₹2662.50.

    13. Heights of 51 girls (cm): less than 140: 4; less than 145: 11; less than 150: 29; less than 155: 40; less than 160: 46; less than 165: 51. Find the median height. If the mode is 148.05, find the mean using the empirical formula.

    Classes: 135–140: 4, 140–145: 7, 145–150: 18, 150–155: 11, 155–160: 6, 160–165: 5. N/2 = 25.5, so the median class is 145–150 (l = 145, cf = 11, f = 18, h = 5). Median = 145 + [(25.5 − 11)/18] × 5 = 145 + 4.03 ≈ 149.03 cm. Mode = 3 Median − 2 Mean, so Mean = (3 × 149.03 − 148.05)/2 ≈ 149.52 cm.
